Singapore: Making their tenth World Cup appearance
INF world ranking: 24
World Cups played: 9
Highest World Cup finish: 8
Singapore qualified for the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 by finishing second behind Sri Lanka at the Regional Qualifier – Asia in September 2018. Currently ranked 24th in the INF world rankings, Singapore will compete at their 10th World Cup in Liverpool, having hosted the event twice in 1983 and most recently in 2011.
Singapore first participated at the 1967 World Cup in Perth, Australia; where they finished eighth out of eight participating nations. This was Singapore’s highest World Cup finish, but their best positional finish was 12th at the 1999 World Cup in Christchurch, New Zealand when 26 nations participated.
Players to look out for
Centre-court player, Carmen Goh found netball whilst playing at school at the age of nine. Now 28 years of age she is a doctor by day and a netball player on the side. Goh is used to the demanding conflict of work and training, before turning to netball she represented Singapore in speed skating at the Southeast Asian Games.
Charmaine Soh is no stranger to the bright lights of world netball – if selected, the Vitality Netball World Cup 2019 will be her third World Cup. Goal shooter/goal attack for Singapore, Soh’s netball career began quite by chance when she attended the wrong sports trials at school and ended up playing netball! 13 years later, however, it is clear netball hasn’t lost its grip on the player who continues to compete at the highest level for her country.
Kimberly plays wing attack and centre for Singapore and comes from a family of netballers. Unbeknown to Wei Yan, her mother used to play recreationally and her sister and brother have both dabbled in the sport. Wei Yan has been playing netball for 14 years and competes in Singapore’s semi-professional Super League as part of the Sneakers team. The World Cup in Liverpool will be her second World Cup if she is successful at selection stage.
Singapore will play Barbados in their opening match in Liverpool. Tickets to see them play can be bought here
